Detox for Health?

 

There are many claims made that by incorporating regular detoxing sessions into your lifestyle, it can help you to lose weight, feel fitter, slimmer, improve energy levels, and ease aches and pains as well as eliminating toxins stored within the body. Whilst there are those who would argue that detoxing only does what the body would do naturally, there appears to be growing numbers of people who embrace this addition to their usual health routines.

Typically, a detox would last between 5 days and two weeks, although it can be used over a weekend for example and this is an easier way to trial it. Alcohol, caffeinated drinks and processed foods are to be reduced or eliminated but there should be an increase to the amount of water consumed.

An increase of vegetables, fruit, rice, pulses, yoghurt, chicken or fish is also recommended as is an increase in vitamins such as Antioxidant vitamins A, C and E.

One of the main benefits to undertaking a detox diet for a limited period is that it highlights all the good and bad content eaten within your usual diet. This can be quite a shock for many people as they begin to realise all of the unhealthy content that they usually consume, therefore increasing awareness.

An extreme detox should be avoided where possible however, and it can be advisable to start off detoxing just for a day or two and then build up over the following months if so desired. Extreme side-effects can be experienced such as a furry tongue, spots or headaches, and this may be due to a too extreme regime being followed.

Be aware however, that undergoing a detox is not for everyone, if you are suffering with diabetes, have stomach ulcers or are on any form of medication, it is worth checking first with your Doctor before commencing any changes to your health regime.

There are lots of activities that can be incorporated alongside the detox which will help to consolidate the feel-good factors such as:

Massage

Treat yourself to a massage with a qualified therapist. Massage will boost circulation, relaxes tense muscles, lowers blood pressure and can aid digestion. It can be done using aromatherapy essential oils which can highlight the sensation. If you are unable to see a therapist, incorporate your own head massage at home and this will help you to feel relaxed.

Brushing

Brushing dry skin with a loofah can help remove dry skin cells and open pores. Using long strokes in the direction of your heart will leave your skin glowing. Enjoy a relaxing bath or shower afterwards for maximum benefit.

Meditation

Meditation will help to clear the mind and relax the body. Incorporate a healing visualisation into the practise which will help to enhance the detox and the elimination of toxins.

Affirmations

Affirmations are very powerful statements of intent, which can be used to endorse and promote feelings of well-being such as: ‘I will feel healthy and more confident'
