Emotional Aspects of Arthritis

Coping with the knowledge that you are suffering from any disease or long-term illness can be a very traumatic time, and may send your emotions spiralling downwards. But for those who have been diagnosed as having arthritis, there can be very mixed and intense emotions experienced as this disease can cause the sufferer to feel depressed, angry, frightened and bewildered.

This is often because this type of diagnosis means that there will be many changes to the patients previously perceived future, and now the future is unable to be planned out and life plans may need to be adapted and changed as the body reacts in an unknown way to this condition.

For a previously able bodied person, the prospect of having osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis and potentially ending up in a wheelchair, is a frightening future to have to face. Patients may have genuine concerns over the type of medication being prescribed and also any potential side effects. All chronic conditions suffer loss in some way and in the case of arthritis; it is loss of mobility, favoured activities, any substantial impact on family and also loss of self-image.

Our image of ourselves is very important and it is understandable why those who have been diagnosed with this condition, find it difficult to keep positive and their spirits high when faced with the irregularities and speed that the condition may impose on their body.

Having a positive outlook is very important as this can help to combat the restrictions that the disease places on an individual, and there are measures that can be taken to help someone to still feel positive and find their inner strength.

Knowledge

Learn what you can about the condition as this will help you to understand what is happening to your body and pick up useful tips which may help with pain control, mobility and dealing with negative emotions.

Fight depression

Understand that you may feel frightened and depressed and that this is a natural process. It is vital that you are honest with your feelings and that you take strength from this honesty. Concentrate on the present more than the future, this helps to cope with any current issues and enables you to deal with any potential problems as and when they occur.

Meditate

It is important to stay calm during this time and by incorporating regular meditative sessions into your daily life, this will allow you to remain relaxed, calm and focussed but also, enables you to practise and develop self-healing techniques via gentle meditation techniques.

Yoga

Take up yoga as this will help to keep the joints supple and will instil feelings of calm and well-being.
